Choosing a Wig That's Right For You

Human Hair or Synthetic?

The first decision you will need to make is whether you go for a wig made out of human hair or one made out of synthetic fibre.

Starkles showcase a large selection of synthetic fibre wigs and only a handful of human hair wigs. The human hair wigs can however be special ordered.

Human Hair Wigs – Advantages

  1. Look & feel natural
  2. You can style them as you like
  3. If cared for correctly they have a life expectancy of up to 12 months
  4. Can be exposed to heat without damaging

Human Hair Wigs – Disadvantages

  1. More than double the price of synthetic wigs
  2. Needs to be styled each time it is washed
  3. Requires shampooing, conditioning and drying up to an hour
  4. Requires straightening or curling depending on the style you want

Synthetic Hair Wigs – Advantages

  1. Pre styled, no need for self styling (stays in shape even after washing)
  2. Less expensive than human hair wigs
  3. Easier to care for than human hair wigs
  4. Are colour fast and will not fade in the sun
  5. Quick and easy
  6. Will last up to 18 months if cared for correctly
  7. Never have to spend money at the hairdressers again!

Synthetic Hair Wigs – Disadvantages

  1. Fibre gets damaged when exposed to heat eg> must be careful of the heat when opening oven doors
  2. You can’t change the style or colour

Standard or Monofilament?

Standard Caps are the simplest cap type produced and therefore the least expensive. Hair is stitched into a string mesh and many of the standard cap wigs have a lace layer at the crown.

Monofilament Caps make the wig look as if it were growing from your own head. The individual grafts are hand-placed onto the thin material at the crown and the special construction on their top and front makes the scalp look as if it were natural. The top portion of the cap is also designed to allow excellent ventilation. Thus, they are the most comfortable and natural on the market today.

Size

Most wig caps are made to a standard size, although there is some varience between brands. Just about all wigs have adjustable straps to ensure the best fit.

Colour & Style

Buying a wig means you can choose whatever colour and style you like! You can go for the colour of hair that you used to have or even a colour you have never been able to achieve at the hairdressers. The qualified and friendly Starkles staff will advise you on colour as well as style to suit your individual face shape.

Not All Synthetic Wigs Are The Same

Buying a wig for the first time can be daunting but it can also be a major financial investment if you know what to look for.

There are many brands on the market but not all are made the same. Many use poor quality materials in their manufacture. It is also important to remember there are various grades of synthetic fibe on the market. Some synthetic fibre looks matted a bit like horses hair while others can look as fake and shiny as ‘Barbie’s’ hair.

Starkles stock only the highest quality designer brand wigs from the states. The majority of these are synthetic, yet so natural looking no one will be able to tell you are wearing one.

The only wig you will ever notice is a bad wig….just food for thought.
